Biodiversity and Climate Change

Kind of Publication: Policy Brief

The Amazon hosts around 10% of the planet’s known species, but its biodiversity is under growing pressure from deforestation, degradation, and climate change. Rising temperatures, a longer and more intense dry season, and forest fragmentation are altering ecosystems, species interactions, and services essential to human well-being. These processes could push the region toward ecological transitions that are difficult to reverse, with impacts on local communities and the climate. The policy brief calls for integrating climate and biodiversity agendas, strengthening protected areas, and enhancing regional cooperation to maintain the Amazon’s connectivity and resilience.
