Global Climate Connection

Kind of Publication: Policy Brief

The policy brief analyzes how interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere directly influence rainfall patterns in the Amazon, highlighting the role of Atlantic warming and the weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Rising ocean temperatures shift the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), intensify droughts, and threaten the stability of the flying rivers that are crucial for regional climate balance. Climate models indicate declining rainfall and warming of up to 2.5 °C in parts of the Amazon by 2050 under high-emissions scenarios, increasing the risk of irreversible ecological transitions. The document recommends strengthening scientific and institutional cooperation, integrating ocean variables into adaptation plans, and expanding international financing and shared responsibility to protect Amazon resilience.
