Tipping Point
Kind of publication: Policy Brief
The Amazon is approaching a tipping point at which the forest may lose its capacity to regenerate due to the combined effects of climate change, deforestation, and fires. Such a collapse would have profound impacts on biodiversity, rainfall patterns across South America, and global climate stability. Scientific evidence indicates that keeping global warming below 1.5 °C and drastically reducing deforestation are essential conditions to avoid this scenario. The policy brief therefore highlights the need for international cooperation, forest restoration, and stronger adaptive capacity among Amazonian populations.
