ORA: Intelligence for the Future of the Amazon

The Amazon Regional Observatory (ORA) is an initiative of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), an intergovernmental body that brings together the eight Amazonian countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela).

Created as a regional reference platform, ORA integrates information, data, and knowledge about the Amazon to generate intelligence, support decision-making, and strengthen regional cooperation for sustainable development.

What Guides the ORA

ORA exists to turn data into action, strengthen regional cooperation and support policies that protect the forest, its people and its future.

MissionThe mission of ORA is to gather and transform data into accessible intelligence, monitor socio-environmental trends and challenges, promote knowledge exchange among Amazonian countries, and support public policies that guarantee the region's sustainable future.
Icon
PurposeIts purpose, along with other ACTO initiatives, is to help ensure that the Amazon does not cross the tipping point, promoting biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.

What is the Tipping Point?

The Tipping Point is the threshold at which the Amazon loses its capacity to regenerate. If deforestation and degradation surpass this limit, the forest may transform into a drier ecosystem, with massive biodiversity loss, reduced rainfall, and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

Monitoring this risk is one of ORA's main missions, through the generation and communication of scientific information that supports actions to prevent the world's largest tropical forest from reaching this critical stage.
