ORA: Intelligence for the Future of the Amazon

The Amazon Regional Observatory (ORA) is an initiative of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), an intergovernmental body that brings together the eight Amazonian countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela).

Created as a regional reference platform, ORA integrates information, data, and knowledge about the Amazon to generate intelligence, support decision-making, and strengthen regional cooperation for sustainable development.

What Guides the ORA

ORA exists to turn data into action, strengthen regional cooperation and support policies that protect the forest, its people and its future.

MissionServe as a permanent forum that brings together institutions and authorities involved in the study of the Amazon, acting as a regional reference center for information on biodiversity, natural resources, and sociodiversity of the Amazon Region.

PurposeMonitor and consolidate information, data, and scientific knowledge approved by the Member States, and guide the different areas of their governments to regularly contribute data and information that feed the different modules of the ORA.

What is the Tipping Point?

The Tipping Point is the threshold at which the Amazon loses its capacity to regenerate. If deforestation and degradation surpass this limit, the forest may transform into a drier ecosystem, with massive biodiversity loss, reduced rainfall, and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

Monitoring this risk is one of ORA's main missions, through the generation and communication of scientific information that supports actions to prevent the world's largest tropical forest from reaching this critical stage.
